About
Dominican Republic
Despite its popularity among tourists, the Dominican Republic has managed not to become spoiled by ugly high-rise resorts. White washed, low-rise hotels sit respectfully on the beachfront, offering low-key luxury to their guests. Juan Dolio is one of the most popular places to head for a Dominican Republic holiday, and visitors are guaranteed an amazing break in one of its high-end hotel resorts. Only half an hour from the capital city of the Dominican Republic, Juan Dolio is quick and easy to reach. It’s the perfect beach resort location, combined with a real taste of the Dominican in the country’s vibrant capital city, Santo Domingo. Stretching along over 20km of coastline, beach lovers will be in their element in Juan Dolio. At this popular resort you can enjoy many different watersports, or simply relax on your sun-lounger looking out at the turquoise sea with a cool drink in hand. What is interesting about many of the Dominican Republic’s coastal resorts is that you don’t have to go very far inland to experience real Dominican culture. Taking advantage of the many Dominican Republic tours, you should be sure to visit a real Dominican village and appreciate the simple life that the majority of locals lead. Bora Chica is another popular Dominican Republic resort, and is only a 15 minute drive from Las Americas International Airport.
Convenience, however, isn’t the only draw of Bora Chica. The resort is blessed with a beautiful white sand beach, giving it that real ‘paradise’ feel. Shallow, warm waters are perfect for swimming and snorkelling, and it’s a fantastic part of the coast to visit with children. For adrenalin junkies there is only one place to head on your Dominican Republic holiday: Cabaret. This resort offers a mind-boggling range of activities and sports to enjoy, including windsurfing, surfing, boogie-boarding, wake-boarding, scuba diving and swimming. Land based activities include kite-boarding, canyoning, mountain biking, dirt biking, horseback riding, golf and caving. Cabaret is the perfect place for those whose idea of a perfect holiday is more than just relaxing on a sun-lounger and working on a fantastic tan. Although the luxury, all-inclusive hotels of the popular Dominican Republic resorts offer a taste of a luxurious lifestyle that many will enjoy, there are places in the Dominican that still offer a relatively unspoilt experience. Puerto Plata is one such place that is friendly and welcoming but doesn’t attract hoards of tourists. Hidden away on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata has the obligatory white sandy beaches and sparkling waters. Playa Grande is one of the area’s most beautiful beaches, but a little exploration could just see you stumble upon a deserted beach that will be your very own little piece of paradise. The beach and the sea are a big part of the Dominican Republic’s draw, and many of the areas attractions are in, on or around the water. Boat tours are readily available, and a particularly good one is the Catamaran cruise to Saona Island. This stunning island has a real paradise lost feel, and is a welcome escape from the mainland tourists. In Puerto Plata, the Ocean World Adventure Park is popular with tourists of all ages. It offers a chance to interact with all manners of marine life, including the opportunity to swim with dolphins. Snorkelling is also popular in the Dominican Republic, and its crystal clear waters offer the perfect environment to get up close to aquatic life. When you’re feeling a little waterlogged there are many inland excursions that you can take. An off-road dune buggy adventure will certainly get the adrenaline flowing, and a monster truck safari which departs from Punta Cana and Puerto Plata is a great way to see some of the countryside. Taking a Country Adventure Safari is another great way to see more than just beaches, and will give you the opportunity to experience how the locals live inland. The main tourist seasons are December to February and July to August. You’ll enjoy the best weather during these times (although July and August can see rain) but also have to deal with the busiest beaches and most crowded resorts. March and April are generally quieter but still very pleasant, as the rainy season doesn’t begin until May. Whenever you choose to visit the Dominican Republic, you’ll be rewarded with some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, at a price that may be more reasonable than you imagined. Surprisingly good value for money, Dominican Republic holidays are a great choice for families, couples and adventurous singles alike.
